How the interpreting service works

Types of interpreting

Interpreting services can vary depending on the context, the number of languages involved (English is not the only one!), the number of attendees, and event duration.

Simultaneous interpreting

We use simultaneous interpreting when you need to limit the length of an event: the interpreter translates the speakers’ speech orally and in real time using soundproof booths, headsets, and microphones to ensure the best acoustics. The audience listens to simultaneous translation through headsets or earpieces.

At least two interpreters work together when interpreting this way, for up to seven working hours, because it’s an activity that takes a lot of energy. This allows the interpreters proper resting times and is a guarantee of the highest quality.

Simultaneous interpreting is the right choice for events with a large audience, like when I lent my voice to interpret during the presentation of a huge fashion brand’s new product.

Pros: the best audio conditions for the interpreter, who can work properly and at their best in a soundproof booth with audio support.
Cons: the costs for audio equipment rental and for at least two interpreters.

Chuchotage

Chuchotage is similar to simultaneous interpreting. Its name comes from the French verb chuchoter, “to whisper” – which is why it is also called whisper interpreting.

On this kind of assignment, the interpreter whispers the oral simultaneous translation to one or two persons, without any kind of audio support.

This is why it’s the type of interpreting to consider only when there’s only one language combination.

Pros: lower cost compared to simultaneous interpreting with two interpreters, audio equipment and soundproof booths.

Cons: suitable only for a very small group and with only one language combination.

Interpreting with bidule system

When you need simultaneous interpreting but there’s no room – or budget – for soundproof booths, you can opt for bidule service: the interpreter will translate orally in real time using a radio microphone set on the same frequency as receivers that are given to the participants.

It is ideal for guided tours in museums, cities or factories.

Pros: the lower price compared to a classic simultaneous service with soundproof booths and audio equipment.

Cons: this type of interpreting doesn’t guarantee good audio quality and it is not suitable if you have a large audience.

Remote interpreting

If it’s not possible to hold an in-person event or if the meeting is virtual, such as a remote medical consultation, you can opt for a remote interpreting service.

This may appear to be an easier and more cost-effective solution, but it is actually more challenging to manage.

This is because the interpreter needs to have remote technical support. For this type of interpreting, you can use dedicated apps and systems that were developed with interpreting in mind: I’m Kudo certified, but I have also worked with Zoom (in interpreting mode), Ablio and Voiceboxer. This was the type of interpreting we used for when doing market research for an English medical company.

Pros: saving on technical equipment rental and interpreter travel costs.

Cons: more stressful for the interpreter; higher risk of technical issues; difficult for users to use the platform in interpreting mode.

Consecutive interpreting

If the event timing allows it, you can opt for consecutive interpreting: as the name suggests, the interpreter translates what the speakers say in sections using a special note-taking system. This service is suitable for events where there are one or two speakers who will present in a language other than the official working language, and the speeches to be interpreted are short. I’ve done consecutive interpreting at an event promoting a children’s book written by a British author.

Pros: it doesn’t need any technical equipment, therefore it’s cheaper than simultaneous interpreting.

Cons: working times are longer, up to almost double; translation is more concise compared to the original speech.

Liaison interpreting

When you are negotiating during a business meeting, the right choice is liaison interpreting: the interpreter translates sentence by sentence what the people attending the meeting are saying, making the communication easier and keeping the rhythm.

This is the right type of interpreting for trade fairs or B2B meetings, in Italy or abroad, with foreign clients. Like that time in Morocco!

Pros: smooth communication and no downtime.

Cons: there must be few listeners and people involved must speak one at a time.

      Technical equipment for your events

I can help you choose the most suitable technical equipment for your event, whether remote or in person.

      Translation of written documents

If in addition to interpreting services you need to get a foreign text into another language, I also offer this service.
