Matthias was the one to write me to get information about my Italian-German wedding interpreting service and understand how it worked. The couple had already submitted the necessary documents to be presented at the town hall, so all I would have had to take care of was translating the ceremony aloud, as required by Italian law.
Getting to know each other
I then suggested we meet for a quick video call. Though we lived in the same city, we couldn’t find a day and time that was suitable for the three of us. The call with the couples is one of the most crucial steps for a wedding assignment because it allows me to have a bond with them, introduce myself and explain how I work so that they can fully trust and rely on me.
Preparing for the assignment
As I always do for wedding interpreting assignments, I collected the material that would be read during the ceremony and the couple and witnesses’ information so that I knew their names and how to pronounce them properly. I then trained simulating similar situations and interpreting wedding ceremonies in Italian and German, focusing on intonation and pronunciation: since they came from Austria, their strong accent was different from other German-speaking areas, so I focused on listening to and reproducing this specific language variation.
Services they chose
I took care of translating aloud in liaison mode the required Italian wording used for a civil wedding into German and the couple’s answers into Italian, so that their wedding was legally valid and recognised in their country of origin.
When the ceremony ended, I helped Lydia and Matthias to get information on the wedding certificate they’d to give to their Austrian town hall to legalise their wedding.
The most suitable interpreting mode for weddings is liaison interpreting, because it lets the interpreter translate aloud sentence by sentence celebrant’s statements and questions and couple’s answers, keeping the ceremony’s rhythm and letting everyone understand what’s going on.
For Matthias and Lydia I translated the wedding documents they had to give to their Austrian town hall with the help of a native German-speaking colleague.
