Elena suggested we meet at the fair the day before it opened. She showed me her booth, the simulator, and explained how she wanted the machinery to be introduced to potential clients and investors. On this occasion I had the pleasure of testing the simulator on my own, allowing me to understand in depth how it worked and experience how similar it was to a real ski slope. It was a lot of fun!

I’m not that sporty, but I have been skiing since I was a child, I was already pretty familiar with the topic. However, it’s one thing to know a sport in theory — being able to translate the most technical aspects of it into another language while maintaining the proper terminology is quite another! Moreover in this case there was also a lot of mechanical terminology involved, and I didn’t know a lot about it before this assignment. This is why it was gathering the materials the customer sent me and doing research into skiing and mechanical jargon and terminology was crucial to, to guarantee I was ready to translate everything and anything that came up.

Elena chose a liaison interpreting service between Italian and German for the four-days-long fair: I stayed next to her at meetings with potential clients and investors who wanted to learn about her innovative machinery, translating aloud from one language into the other, allowing Elena to introduce her ambitious project and letting other people understand her words and ask questions. I accompanied Elena and her coworkers during testing sessions on the simulator to bridge the linguistic gap between them and their guests who wanted to test the machinery. I translated safety measures and instructions on how to properly use the simulator from German into Italian, and I translated any user queries or questions from Italian into German. Lastly, the fair held some events and talks Elena wanted to attend and I translated the speakers out loud for her in the chuchotage mode from Italian into German, so that she could get updated on the latest news.

Liaison interpreting was the best choice when introducing the project and explaining how to use the simulator because it allowed us to keep the rhythm of the dialogue without too many pauses or waiting time.

Chuchotage interpreting was most suitable when Elena wanted to attend the fair’s events, because the speakers weren’t aware that an oral translation was needed for some of the attendees and they didn’t pause to allow for liaison interpreting. This way, Elena could attend the speeches in real time with simultaneous whispered translation, only for her.  

In addition to chuchotage interpreting that wasn’t foreseen initially, after the fair I stayed in contact with Elena who asked me to take care of her translating her materials to introduce it to as many people as possible.

Not only did I translate her presentations and website from German into, but also I supported her translating email and other messages from Italian, English and French into German and vice versa, so that she could correspond with potential clients and give them all the information they wanted.

Difficulties

That was Elena’s first time working with a professional interpreter, at first she wanted to double-check everything had been translated and nothing missed out: she kept asking me if I translated everything she had said and everything other people told me in Italian and she didn’t always seem persuaded. After a few days we found our dimension and she started trusting me.
