An English wedding in the hills of Modena

A wedding planner from my city contacted me to ask about a special assignment: a couple living in Berlin wanted to get married in the hills around Modena and they were looking for someone to celebrate their wedding in English. I had never taken this kind of assignment before, but I was intrigued. This is actually the story of how I started working on weddings in the first place!

Just say: I do

Working together

First contact

Lejla and Jens are a couple coming from Bosnia (her)and Asia (him) who met and fell in love in Berlin. During one of their trips they came to Modena to the very hills where they decided to host their wedding. Lejla and Jens were really busy and delegated all the planning to their wedding planner. When talking with her I learned they were looking for a very simple celebration, with just a few friends and family from all over the world. To make sure everyone understood and felt involved in the ceremony, we decided to hold it in English, a lingua franca shared by the couple and their guests. The wedding celebration was merely symbolic, with no legal value, and the couple wrote the speech for me to give on the wedding day.

Preparing for the assignment

As this was my first wedding assignment, I had to do a lot of research and simulations to get ready for any situation. As luck would have it, when I got contacted for this job I had just got married myself, so I was familiar with the ceremony because I had already experienced it. Every wedding is truly unique and I spent time doing online research and learning the celebration speech. I focused in particular on wedding terminology and proper pronunciation of the jargon and of the couple and witnesses’ names, which often represent an obstacle. This phase, for this first assignment, laid the foundations for all the weddings I have since attended as a celebrant or interpreter.

Services Lejla and Jens chose

Wedding celebration in English: Lejla and Jens’ celebration

Lejla and Jens opted for a wedding celebration in English, in which I gave a speech including the wedding vows. From the initial welcome and greeting the guests to going through the couple’s love story, we reached their vows and then pronounced them husband and wife.

Difficulties

This assignment was a tricky one because performing a service was totally new to me! I had to deep dive into what has to be included in a wedding ceremony and be prepared for any situation.
